Tall ceilings and
a wall of windows

The Grand Ballroom seats up to 350 under soaring ceilings, with chandeliers and expansive windows that fill the room with daylight. It is a genuinely beautiful space, and both of those features change how the night has to be built.

Height is the first one. Uplighting is specified by throw — how far a beam travels before it runs out of intensity. A fixture that beautifully washes a ten-foot wall dies halfway up a ballroom wall like this one and leaves a bright puddle at the bottom with darkness above it. The fixtures have to be chosen for the room's actual height, not bought by the unit.

Daylight is the second. A room with big windows looks completely different at five in the afternoon than it does at nine at night, so lighting that reads beautifully in the evening can be invisible during a summer cocktail hour. We program to the timeline rather than setting one look and leaving it — which is exactly what intelligent lighting is for.

One space, the
whole night

Grand Oaks is set up so a wedding can move from ceremony to cocktails to reception without relocating guests. That is a real comfort advantage — nobody is herded across a property — but it puts the pressure on transitions.

When the same room does three jobs, the change between them has to be carried by sound and light, because the walls are not doing it. Ceremony needs speech clarity above everything else. Cocktails need presence without dominating conversation. The reception needs the room to feel like a different place than it did two hours earlier. Those are three separate specifications delivered in one space, and they are cued rather than improvised.

The room turn is also on a clock. We plan our setup around the venue's schedule rather than negotiating for time on the day.

Three rooms
under one roof

Beyond the Grand Ballroom, Grand Oaks runs the Fair Way at around 100 and the Overlook Room at around 110. On a busy Saturday more than one of them is in use.

That matters for sound in a specific way: low frequency travels through a building's structure far more readily than anything else. The answer is not to run everything quietly — it is to aim the system into your room rather than at shared walls, and to keep the bottom end controlled. Done properly, your floor gets its energy and the room next door never knows.

If you are in the Fair Way or the Overlook rather than the Grand Ballroom, the specification changes completely. A hundred guests do not need a 350-guest rig, and we would tell you so rather than sell you one.
